Desert Films è una performance teatrale dal vivo con protagonisti James Franco e Blaine Kern, parte di una serie di narrazione cinematografica che esplora la natura e il prezzo della fama.
Questo lavoro riprende il personaggio ispirato a Robert Blake dal film Highway, presentandolo come una misteriosa manifestazione che affronta un giovane attore – rapito e legato – e pronuncia un monologo inquietante sulla seduzione e le trappole della celebrità.
La performance sfuma intenzionalmente il confine tra cinema e teatro, realtà e finzione, creando un’esperienza intima e perturbante in cui il pubblico ha la sensazione di assistere a qualcosa di crudo e immediato – quasi come se una scena cinematografica prendesse vita sul palcoscenico.
“Uno dei miei principali interessi è Hollywood – leggo ogni libro possibile sui film del passato, su quelli contemporanei, e sulle star, i registi, i montatori, i direttori della fotografia e gli sceneggiatori nel corso della storia di questo mezzo – anche gli scenografi. Amo profondamente l’arte e il mestiere del cinema e le persone che vi si dedicano. Sono anche molto interessato alle storie che riguardano Hollywood come una sorta di dipendenza, storie in cui le persone amano Hollywood così tanto che qualcuno finisce addirittura per morire a causa della sua vicinanza al “calore” di Hollywood.”

Desert Films is a live stage performance starring James Franco and Blaine Kern in a cinematic storytelling series exploring the nature and cost of fame.
This piece revisits the Robert Blake–inspired character from Highway, appearing as a mysterious manifestation who confronts a young actor—kidnapped and tied up—and delivers a haunting monologue about the seduction and traps of celebrity.
The performance intentionally blurs the line between film and theater, reality and fiction, creating an intimate, unsettling experience where audiences feel they are witnessing something raw and immediate—almost as if a film scene has come alive on stage.

“One of my main interests is Hollywood — I read every book I can about old movies, new movies, and stars and directors and editors, cinematographers and writers over the history of the medium — set designers, too. I just love the art and craft of filmmaking and the people that engage with it. I am also very interested in stories we that relate to Hollywood as a kind of addiction, stories where people love Hollywood so much that someone actually dies because of their proximity to the heat of Hollywood “ – James Franco
